Wes Cooley is credited with bringing AMA Superbike into  the modern era. Hard riding Cooley, who originally rode a Kawasaki for Pops Yoshimura, switched to the better handling GS1000S Suzuki, giving them their first superbike titles in 1979 and 1980. Later he would again switch between Kawasaki and Suzuki before crashing heavily in 1985 and retiring.
